American River Rafting - The South Fork

THE SOUTH FORK OF THE AMERICAN RIVER –

This is absolutely the most popular California whitewater rafting area. The season starts in spring, and continues through summer until the early October. This is because the water flow rate is artificially controlled by the reservoirs upstream, providing above-average water levels on a daily basis. It is relatively safe also, being calmer than the Middle or the North Forks. The whole South Fork is divided into two sections – the Upper section, and the Lower one. Plenty of Class 02 to Class 04 rapids are available in both sections, making it equally enjoyable by both experienced California whitewater rafting teams and first-timers.

The Upper sector is about 9 miles long. It starts with an area called the Meat Grinder (nice Class 03 example), where you will dodge some serious rocks and then continue through endless Class 02/03 sections all the way to the finishing touch – the Trouble Maker S-turn of Class 04.

The Lower Section’s length is approximately 12 miles. This California whitewater rafting ride is smooth and easy in the beginning – Class 02 rapid, nothing special. Nevertheless, after a few miles downstream, the canyon walls start closing in as rafters enter the so-called “The Gorge” area, where everybody is in for a chilling Class 03-04 surprise. The Satan’s Cesspool, the Fowler’s Rock, the Hospital Bar – you name it, these rapids cause trouble for even seasoned veterans.
